Dr. George Rozelle Introduces Biofeedback – Editor’s Note: We spoke with George Rozelle, PhD with the MindSpa Integrative Wellness Center in Sarasota. George is a licensed and certified psychologist and neurotherapist. Please call 941-378-9959 or visit MindSpaSarasota.com.
Dr. Rozelle, what is biofeedback and how does it help patients?
Biofeedback is a process of attaching sensors to the body to record physiological information and feeding back that information to produce positive physical and psychological changes. Traditional biofeedback involves measuring the autonomic nervous system. It is an excellent tool for developing self-regulation skills. EEG biofeedback is also called neurofeedback. It involves measuring and training brain wave patterns for optimal functioning.
How do you use biofeedback to enhance mental fitness training?
I observed over many years of clinical work that, regardless of the condition, clients reported other improvements including mental sharpness. This led me to view my work as a form of brain fitness training. When the brain works better everything else works better.
What are some of the ways you help veterans and first-responders deal with PTSD?
Neuroscience has shown that PTSD is essentially a brain that’s stuck in flight or fight mode. When triggered, the emotional brain hijacks the rational brain. We are using a reliable form of acoustical neuromodulation to tune into the frequency of the trauma circuit in the brain and disrupt the trauma memory with a neutralizing sound. We apply the same process with first responders and other adults who have suffered trauma.
What have you learned from helping retired NFL football players dealing with head-injury trauma?
Most players who make it to the NFL experience brain hits for many years starting with youth football. It is the repetitive hits more than the severe hits that create damage over time. We’ve made progress with treatment, but we can’t yet measure the continued buildup of tau protein characteristic of CTE.
What other clinical services are available at MindSpa?
While neurofeedback can help people it’s important to assess and treat the entire person. At MindSpa, I’ve put together a team of talented professionals in key areas such as functional medicine, acupuncture, chiropractic, psychiatry, psychotherapy, body work, and wellness coaching.
What are a few of your favorite childhood memories growing up in Englewood?
I fondly recall night snook fishing and shrimping off the old wooden bridge, fishing in Lemon Bay, Stump Pass, and the Gulf, and having good times at the old Lock and Key. We lived on the bay side of Manasota Key and my father and I converted a boat house into a squash racquet and basketball court. We enjoyed many hours together. (Editor’s Note: George Rozelle, Sr. was a popular local teacher and coach).
