Kenny Cowell’s passion for beautiful flowers and plants spans a lifetime. When he was a young child in Nashville, his parents would give him a dime each week to spend at the grocery store. He usually bought a candy bar, but one day, he decided to purchase a small plant instead.
“It was a hyacinth and I planted it in our yard,” Ken said. “I was fascinated when it bloomed, and I’ve been gardening and appreciating plants ever since.”
Ken moved to Punta Gorda about 10 years ago after retiring from two careers as an orthopedic surgeon for small animals and the director of technology for a national architectural firm. “I’ve had gardens in many parts of the country, and it’s hard to beat Florida when it comes to growing exotic blooms. I learn mostly from getting my hands into the dirt. It takes time, patience and effort to find the right place and environment for each plant.”
Ken appreciates Punta Gorda with its small town culture and sense of community. “I enjoy volunteering at the Peace River Wildlife Center where I help with their flora,“ he added.
Ken tends to his home garden almost daily and he’s learned a lot about growing bromeliads and orchids. “They are reliable bloomers that are sturdy enough to handle the hot summers, chilly snaps in the winter and sandy soil. These plants also live for many years.”
Ken is also passionate about collecting fine art. He has collected paintings and other items of the Art Deco style for more than 40 years. Art Deco is characterized by rich colors, bold geometry and decadent detail work. It flourished in the U.S. and Europe in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Ken is also enthusiastic about collecting mid-century modern sculpture with its clean lines and elegance. Cooking is another passion.
